Transcribe a voice message

Hover any voice note in WhatsApp Web — Transcript and Translate buttons appear. First use downloads the Whisper model once (~75 MB).

  1. Open a chat with voice messages on web.whatsapp.com.
  2. Hover the voice note — click Transcript.
  3. Wait for Whisper to process (first run downloads the model).
  4. Read the TRANSCRIPT panel — copy or use the speaker icon.
  5. Click Translate on the transcript to convert to your language.

Whisper language settings

Enable voice message transcript in Settings and set a default language if auto-detect is wrong for your contacts.

  1. Settings → enable Voice message transcript (Whisper base).
  2. Set Voice note language to Auto detect or a fixed language.
  3. Maximum 5-minute voice notes per transcription.
  4. Click Save settings.

Frequently asked questions

How does WhatsApp voice message transcription work?

The extension uses OpenAI Whisper (base model) running locally in your browser. Click Transcript on a voice note and the AI converts speech to text without uploading audio to WhatSender servers.

Do I need an OpenAI API key for Whisper?

No — Whisper runs locally as part of your Chrome extension license. A one-time model download happens on first use.

Which languages can Whisper transcribe?

Whisper supports many languages including Hindi, Urdu, English, Spanish, and Arabic. Use Auto detect or pick a fixed language in Settings.

Is there a length limit?

Voice notes up to 5 minutes can be transcribed per request.
